Thieves take $40,000 cash, merchandise from local store

The manager of Tazo Food Mart on Calhoun Avenue said thieves entered his business through the roof Monday night, damaging the property and stealing $35,000 in cash, reports stated.

According to Rome police reports:

The manager was notified by his alarm company Monday night that the store’s phone line had been cut.

When the manager arrived he noticed a hole in the roof and the steel safe from under the counter was gone. Police say the burglars also damaged slot machines inside the store, taking all of the coins inside. The manager reported that $35,000 in cash and coins was taken as well as $4,800 in phone cards and $28 in cigarettes.

The suspects were caught on store surveillance.

An unidentified man who allegedly robbed the Wachovia Bank in West Rome this morning died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading police on a chase that ended at the Steak 'N Shake parking lot in the Village Shopping Center on Turner McCall Boulevard, police said.

The suspect did not have any ID on his person, said Coroner Barry Henderson.

Police are processing the vehicle, which had a Cobb County tag, to see if they can determine his identification, Henderson said.

Ray Chastain said he witnessed the shooting after the suspect stopped at Steak 'N Shake.

Chastain said he saw the police approach the vehicle and saw the man shoot himself.

“He raised the gun and popped himself. That’s what it looked like to me,” Chastain said.

Chastain said the man had the gun in his right hand, which would explain why the driver’s side window was knocked out.

Police found a bullet casing an estimated 60 feet from the vehicle.

Police also noted that no law enforcement firearms were fired at the scene.

The suspect was described as a 6-foot Asian male dressed in blue jeans and gray shirt.

Police say he robbed the Wachovia Bank, 2219 Shorter Ave. across from the Gala Shopping Center.

The suspect then exited the bank and left in a blue car.

According to a reporter on scene, the robber, driving a powder blue Acura, collided with Rome K-9 unit on the passenger side. Airbags were deployed in the Acura.

Rome City Police Lt. Roy Willingham told reporters that the suspect's gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Police have called the coroner to the scene.

Dept.Chief Lonzo Roberson confirmed that the suspect was armed during the robbery. He could not confirm the type of firearm the suspect was carrying.

The amount of cash taken has not been determined and there was no evidence that anyone else was involved in the robbery, Roberson said.

4 dead, including child, 1 hurt in Boston shooting

BOSTON – A shooting early Tuesday left a toddler and three others dead, and a fifth person was hospitalized and not expected to survive, police said. There have been no arrests, and police have asked for the public's help.

Police responded to the Boston's Mattapan neighborhood just after 1 a.m. Two men and a woman found in the street were pronounced dead at the scene.

The toddler, 2 or 3, died later at the hospital, police department spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said. A man in his 30s was taken to a hospital and is not expected to survive, she said.

No names were released, and it was too early to speculate on a motive, Driscoll said.

"Right now, it's an extremely active homicide investigation," Driscoll said.

Investigators think the victims knew the shooter, and the commissioner appealed to the public for help in apprehending the suspect or suspects.

Police are looking for a silver or gray Ford Explorer that may be connected to the shooting. The vehicle was seen leaving shortly after the shooting, Driscoll said.

Police recovered a "significant amount of evidence" at the scene, Commissioner Edward Davis said., without getting specific.

The shooting took place on Woolson Street, lined with close-packed, three-story homes. Family and friends of the victims hugged and cried behind yellow police tape Tuesday as neighbors looked on, shaking their heads.

"Why?" one woman wailed, as others attempted to console her. A minister was also at the scene.

Mattapan is on the southern edge of the city near the border with the affluent suburb of Milton.

The shooting was the latest in a spike of violence in the city that has frustrated police, politicians and community leaders. There had been 50 homicides in the city as of Sept. 27, according to police department data, up from 40 in the same period last year. In Mattapan, there had been 14 homicides in 2010 prior to Tuesday's incident, compared to six at the same time in 2009.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was so affected by the slaying of a pizza delivery driver in early September that he told a group of college students that he would torture the three suspects, one of whom is a teenage girl. Menino, who had met the victim's daughters when they had previously worked in the mayor's office, later said he regretted the remarks.

Tuesday's shooting was the single deadliest in Boston since December 2005, when four young men — including three members of a rap group — were fatally shot in a makeshift basement recording studio in the Dorchester neighborhood. Two men are serving prison sentences in connection with that shooting.

The shooting took place at about 1:30 p.m. Monday at a Texaco gas station in the 3200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Investigators said a man driving a Honda Civic pulled into the gas station, exited his car and opened fire on another vehicle, killing a man and injuring a 19-year-old pregnant woman and a 2-year-old child. They were taken to area hospital, said Atlanta Police Officer K.Y. Jones.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the dead man as 19-year-old La'deddric Love. Police also identified the pregnant woman as Tedra Jordan and the child as Jeniya Love. Jordan was shot in the buttocks and calf, and Love was shot in the foot, police said.

Atlanta police sources told Young that the gunman is still at large.

Police said they don't have a motive for the shooting.

No Death Penalty For Cops Charged In Katrina Shootings

The Justice Department says it will not seek the death penalty against four current or former New Orleans police officers charged in deadly shootings on a bridge after Hurricane Katrina.

Prosecutors disclosed the decision in court documents Friday. They did not say why they were not seeking the death penalty.

Less than a week after the 2005 storm, two people were killed and four others were wounded by police on the Danziger Bridge. The shootings led to a widespread investigation of the police department.

Five former officers already have pleaded guilty to charges they helped cover up the shootings. Prosecutors have said police fabricated witnesses, falsified reports and plotted to plant a gun to make it appear that the shootings were justified.
