Sept. 11 remembered

Survivors of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks make their way through smoke, dust & debris on Fulton St. (© Gulnara Samoilova/AP)

Nine years after Sept. 11, 2001, the words and images linger: Planes flying into the twin towers (see video), the Pentagon strike (see video) and a crash landing in a Pennsylvania field. Nearly 3,000 people died, most of them civilians.

The World Trade Center is being rebuilt, and a memorial is in the works. The Pentagon has been restored and a memorial (see photos) built. A memorial (see video) is also under way in Pennsylvania.

What follows are some of the heroic stories from those days.
